Dear Mr. Trump
Make America Great Again?
Dear Mr. Trump,
Congratulations on your victory and new title as the forty fifth president of the United States. It is an honor I hope you take seriously and hold with dignity and grace. America is an amazing country that deserves a leader that reflects its greatness. So my question to you is – Will you be that Leader?
I am not going to deny that I filled in the circle next to your name on my ballot. This action was not without thought. Going back to the primaries you were not my first choice, nor my second or third. To be blatantly honest you were my last choice as a republican candidate. I thought you running was a joke, a gimmick, simply a publicity stunt. As time passed however I had to come to accept that you would be representing my party. I tried for months to find a way out of voting for you. Unfortunately, the reality became that I disliked all the other candidates, third party included, and my vote for you simply became a vote that wasn’t going to someone I disliked even more.
This fact is the saddest part of the election. Being a young college student this was my first opportunity to vote for the president. I vividly remember the 2012 presidential election and thinking to myself that in four years I too get to vote. In my mind voting meant I was a true American and an adult that could contribute to society. As a teen who wanted nothing more than to grow up voting was an exciting rite of passage. Then it came time for me to fill out my absentee ballot, it took me three weeks to fill in a bubble for president. I had contemplated every option. Hillary, Trump, Johnson, even a write in vote. Finally, I concluded that I would vote for you. How I came to this conclusion is not important but I want you to know is that it is not because I like you. You do not reflect my standards and values. Some of the statements you have made are disturbing and worrisome. Luckily for you I disliked your competition even more.
Being a young Christian in the millennial generation has always had its challenges. It means I have unpopular opinions and was raised with a set of values that differ from my fellow millennials. I fight every day to not be a stereotypical millennial. Being a millennial who supports the Trump Presidency creates an even bigger challenge that I now must overcome. Saying “I voted for Trump” leads to people assuming I am racist, anti-women’s rights, and anti-Muslim. I have been called many harsh things in the last year due to supporting your campaign. Mr. Trump this is a problem only you can fix. You have created this stereotype for your supporters, that if peace and unity is to be created across America, must be wiped out. Your supporters are not vicious anti-anything-that-isn’t-a-white-man, they are men and women alike who want change in America.
So Mr. Trump, the ball in in your court. You have been chosen to lead and now we are standing watching your every move. Remember the media is just waiting for their first chance to attack you and those who support your presidency. You are expected to fail and destroy America, but I have faith in you. I have an optimism for the future and believe that you have the capability to change America for the better. I want you to succeed. My children will learn about you in history class one day and they will ask me how I voted. I do not want to feel shame when I tell my future children that I cast my vote for you.
“In God We Trust” is not just a statement on our currency. It is a statement I believe whole heartedly. I know that you were given the privilege of being our president because it is what God has chosen for us. Matthew 20:26 says “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant”. America has chosen you and it is now your turn to serve America as President. God has given you a gift, one I hope you do not take lightly. The people are counting on you Mr. Trump, will you truly Make America Great Again?
Sincerely,
An American
